Each year, on the third Thursday of November at midnight, Beaujolais nouveau is put on sale around the globe. This year, the Beaujolais Nouveau celebration will therefore take place on 21 November.
What is Beaujolais?
Beaujolais is located in parts of the Rhône and Burgundy departments, and covers approximately 22,000 hectares. The region benefits from ideal conditions for vine growth as it receives plenty of sunshine and has granite soils that give excellent structure to the wines. Beaujolais is made up of 12 appellations (specific zones where wine is produced): Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Côte-de-Brouilly, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, Régnié, Saint-Amour, Beaujolais Villages and Beaujolais. Each of these appellations has its own characteristics.
What is Beaujolais Nouveau?
Beaujolais Nouveau is a wine made from Gamay grapes and is put on sale in the same year as its harvest. Since the 1950s, winemakers have been allowed to sell a younger wine called “vin primeur”. Primeur wine is put on sale once fermentation has taken place, which is approximately 2 months after harvest. The winemaking method is specific to the Beaujolais region, and only manual harvesting is permitted.
The “Beaujolais Nouveau” is intended to be consumed fairly quickly after fermentation. It undergoes a specific winemaking process, which produces a wine that is low in tannins, very fruity, and sometimes has flavours such as peach, red fruits or raspberry. In just over 50 years, Beaujolais Nouveau production has increased 16-fold. Thus, this year, 32 million bottles have been produced, of which 16 million are intended for French consumption, with the remainder being exported to more than 110 countries. Furthermore, Japan is the biggest consumer of Beaujolais Nouveau, with nearly 8 million bottles sold. This is followed by the United States with nearly 2.4 million bottles and Germany with 1.3 million bottles. There is therefore worldwide enthusiasm for Beaujolais Nouveau.
Since its creation, the popularity of this wine has continued to grow. It has also been promoted around the world under the slogan, “Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrivé!”
