What is the French people's favourite city?

Paris has always been considered the most beautiful city in France in the eyes of foreign tourists, it is moreover the most visited city in France or even in Europe with some 27 million visitors per year. But is it the preferred place of residence for the French?

The weekly news magazine L’Express recently published a ranking of the cities preferred by the French. This ranking is made up of three sub-rankings – each of the categories refers to the age groups of residents: the preferred city for young people, families and retirees.

Not such a silly ranking! Indeed, the expectations and criteria of a family with two children differ from those of a retired couple or young students. The ranking was therefore based on 31 criteria (baccalaureate pass rate, capacity to obtain a place in a nursery, ease of access to healthcare, cultural spaces or even property prices and size of the public transport network…), each with a different coefficient depending on the importance for young people, families, or retired people. By combining these criteria, L’Express gave a mark out of 20 to each city studied.

Those who would have bet on winning for large cities such as Paris or Lyon would have been very largely surprised by their defeat. Indeed, the big winner of this study is… beautiful Bordeaux, capital of Aquitaine!

It places in the top 5 of each of the 3 rankings established by L’Express. The city is ranked second in the ranking of preferred cities for young people and in that for retirees. Likewise, it places fourth in the ranking of preferred cities for families. Toulouse, for its part, is first in the ranking of preferred cities for young people, Nantes is the small favourite for families and Angers that for retirees.
