What is a Sextant for?

Everyone knows Sextant France but do you know the sextant?

This measuring instrument was invented in the 18th century. Designed for marine navigation, it enables the measurement of latitude, in other words, the evaluation of the angular distance between the horizon and a distant object. These two points are observed simultaneously, and this regardless of the movements of the vessel, which therefore has no influence on the accuracy of the measurement.

Beyond its usefulness for sailors, this instrument is also used in astronomical navigation, measuring the angular distance between the horizon and the celestial body. Building on its success, the sextant was even presented to an admiral, member of the Royal Academy of the Marine, following the successful completion of a scientific expedition at sea by King Louis XV.
