Climate

The climate is Mediterranean with a lot of sunshine. The winters are mild, the summers are hot. The region of Var has the most sunshine in the whole France and over 300 days of sunshine in the southern coastal region. The driest month is July. The wettest two months are October and November. Then the highest rainfall is during December to February.

Geography

The relief of Var suggests localized weather conditions. Most of the valleys and plains are closed and this limits the air circulation thus making the air better on the hilltops than on the valleys. The western part of Val is quite influenced by the Mistral. On the east is Flayosc that is affected by the marine winds that blow through the Argen valley.

More than half of the area of the department is covered with woodland. According to the rock, the region can be divided into two parts by drawing a line from Toulon through Draguignan. On the west part is limestone that is a chalky substance constituted from calcium carbonate and calcium. On the east the rocks have a crystalline structure.

Provence has a great infrastructure and the nearest airports are in Nice and Toulon. There is a high speed train service that connects with the other parts of France and Europe.

There are a lot of towns that are good for shopping, schools and have an excellent health service with many specialists doctors and hospitals.

Towns

There are 430 km of sunny coastline that include the towns of Fréjus, St Tropez and St Raphaël that are good not only for sunbathing but also for scuba diving and sailing.

The region offers great seafood, fine wine and sparkling med offered even in inland. There is a road system that links all the towns.
The inland of Var is rich in vineyards and olive groves, lavender plantations and dazzling fields of sunflowers. There are medieval towns and provincial markets. This region is positioned between the mountains and the sea.

History

Major attractions are the Royal Basilica in Saint Maximin, the Roman heritage in Fréjus that consists of the arena, the ancient theater and the aqueduct. Another interesting place is the Cistercian abbey at Thoronet. Very beautiful are the golden sands of Gassin, near St. Tropez. Magnificent are the Golden Islands, Port Cross Natural Park and the protected underwater path. Some more remarkable villages are Aups, Bargemon, Cotignac. Cadiere d’Azur, Mons, le Castelet.

Gastronomy

In the latest years the provincial cooking and gastronomy have become fashionable again. There are new and talented young chiefs and also a lot of experienced and long-established chiefs that take the credit. The gastronomy is based on the quality of the production like the famous goat’s cheese, olives and olive oil, the black truffle of Aups, the vegetables from the kitchen, orchard fruits and chestnuts.

People from different regions come here to try the cuisine. It has evolved during the time.

Some of the cuisines are La Bouillabaisse or Mediterranean Fish Stew, La Bourride or Fish Soup, Tuna Provençale, La Daube or Provençal Meat and Wine Stew with fresh pasta.

You also have to mention about the wine and all the experts agree that the vineyards of Provence are the oldest in France. This area is part of the 3 Appellations d’Origine Controlée: Les Cotes de Provence , Les Coteaux Varois, The Wines of Bandol.
