Argentat

Argentat is a village located in the south of the Correze department (19) of Nouvelle Aquitaine, near the city of Brive la Gaillarde. It is situated in a basin carved mostly by the Doustre, Maronne and Souvigne rivers.This town is close to its nature and knew how to preserved the beauty and authenticity of its landscape. There, the traveller will discover the delights of the countryside and the numerous air, land and water activities offered by the area.

Access

Argentat is on the RN120 which links Limoges or Tulle to Aurillac. Brive la Gaillarde is also accessible via this road. Argentat is connected to the Dordogne valley until Beaulieu thanks to the 12 and 116 roads crossing numerous places of interest.
Scheduled flights to Paris are available from the Brive, Aurillac and Limoges airports. Clermont-Ferrand airport provides flights across Europe.
As for railway services, Argentat is 50km from Brive train station.

History

Argentat’s eventful past is being told by its numerous monuments such as its barge, its paved docks or its traditional houses. La Maison du Patrimoine offers a permanent exhibition which introduces the History of the city, of the archeological remains of its monuments, and of the inland water shipping.

Activities

Argentat has a few places to visit such as the docks where traditional fishermen houses are still standing; there, a recreated “Courpet” (traditional boat with flat bottom) reminds the time when “Gabariers” were only sailing downstream to provide commerce towards Bergerac or Libourne. The old town is represented among others by the Sainte Claire Street with its “Couvent des Clarisses” created in 1647, or “Hotel de Turenne” whose turrets are easily recognizable. “Le Chateau de Neuville” or “Chateau Fenelon” is another must-see of Argentat.
As for sportsmen, Argentat offers a wide range of activities such as canoeing, cycle touring, hiking, fishing, tennis, petanque or air activities.
There is a fair every first and third Thursday of the month (every Thursday in July/August), Pottery fair in July and an exhibition of local products organized by the tourist home.

Food and Drink

Le Pays d’Argentat offers some specialities such as “Millassou” made of grated potatoes, bacon, garlic and parsley; “Pounti” is a local recipe with bacon, eggs, onions, herbs and prunes. “Tourtous” are flat cakes made of puff pastry and buckwheat which, in the past, were served as bread.
