Lights, Action, Camera! 67th edition of the Cannes Film Festival
The 67th edition of the glamorous and world-famous Cannes Film Festival began last Wednesday and will run until next Sunday, 25th of May.
Each year, Cannes rolls out the famous red carpet for international celebrities ready to climb the 24 steps ‘towards glory’ and welcomes thousands of press officers, sponsors and photographers. This event is covered by major TV channels all over the world and is the very definition of French glamour: art, the French Riviera and luxury.
Jane CAMPION, the famous New Zealand director, producer and screenwriter, renowned for winning the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1993 for her film ‘The Piano’, has been nominated as President of the Jury for 2014. The other members of the Jury this year include:
– Carole BOUQUET, a French actress, who picked up the César for Best Actress in 1979 for her role in ‘Too Beautiful For You’.
– Sofia COPPOLA, an American screenwriter, director, producer and actress, who received the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2003 for ‘Lost in Translation’, and became the third woman (and first American woman) to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director.
– Leila HATAMI, born in Tehran, she is considered an icon of Iranian cinema for her title role in Dariush Mehrjui’s ‘Leila’ in 1998 and for winning the best actress award in the 26th edition of the Montréal World Film Festival for her role in ‘The Deserted Station’.
– Do-Yeon JEON, a South Korean actress, has won many awards throughout her career, including Best Actress at Cannes in 2007 for her portrayal of a broken woman in Lee Chang-Dong’s ‘Secret Sunshine’.
– Willem DAFOE, a worldwide famous American actor who has performed in over 80 films and received two Oscar nominations, his first one for ‘Platoon’ and his second one for ‘Shadow of the Vampire’.
– Gael GARCIA BERNAL, born in Mexico, founded ‘Canana Productions’ with Diego Luna and Pablo Cruz in 2005.
– JIA Zhangke, a Chinese film director and screenwriter, considered as a leading figure in the ‘Sixth Generation’ movement in Chinese cinema.
– Nicolas WINDING REFN, a Danish director, writer and producer, who wrote and directed the extremely violent and uncompromising movie ‘Pusher’ in 1996, and was awarded Best Director at Cannes in 2011 for his masterpiece ‘Drive’.

– LEVIATHAN: Directed by Andrey ZVYAGINTSEV
– MAPS TO THE STARS: Directed by David CRONENBERG
– MOMMY: Directed by Xavier DOLAN
– MR. TURNER: Directed by Mike LEIGH
– RELATOS SALVAJES (WILD TALES): Directed by Damián SZIFRÓN
– SAINT LAURENT: Directed by Bertrand BONELLO
– SILS MARIA (CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA): Directed by Olivier ASSAYAS
– THE HOMESMAN: Directed by Tommy Lee JONES
– THE SEARCH: Directed by Michel HAZANAVICIUS
– IMBUKTU: Directed by Abderrahmane SISSAKO
– WINTER SLEEP: Directed by Nuri Bilge CEYLAN
The award winners will be announced next Sunday.
The Festival’s history
The first festival at Cannes was held in 1939 with Louis Lumière as President of the Jury. After World War II, the first edition of the International Festival in its current form took place on 20th September 1946. It included films from 66 different countries. Since 1952 the festival has always taken place in May.
“The aim of the Festival is to encourage the development of the art of film making in all its forms, while fostering and maintaining a spirit of collaboration among all film making countries” (extract from the Festival policy, 1948.)
Festival de Cannes reputation has always brought and attracted the world’s best actors. Celebrities to walk down the ‘Tapis Rouge’ include Kirk Douglas, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, Cary Grant, Romy Schneider, and Simone Signoret, all of whom have won the famous Palme d’Or.
