Fête de la musique
The Fête de la Musique will take place this 21st of June. It is celebrated around the world as the kick-off of the summer of the countries of the Northern Hemisphere. Indeed, its date corresponds with the summer Solstice, ensuring the longest day of the year. Its goal is simple: to allow anyone to perform on the biggest stage in the world: the street. Whether you are an amateur band or a confirmed artist, the Fête de la Musique is a moment of sharing and conviviality.
Conceived by Joël Cohen in the mid-1970s, it was Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture, who pushed the project of the Fête de la musique. Its first edition, in 1982, marks the beginning of a popular success that will inspire many countries. Indeed, in 2014, we can count more than 120 countries and 340 cities worldwide taking over the French concept. The longest day of the year offers a variety of concerts and eclectic atmospheres.
The Fête de la Musique allows amateur groups to enjoy a local exhibition. Indeed, the street or bars serve as scenes open to these musicians. Any kind of audience has access to any type of music: rap, jazz, rock, traditional or commercial. More than 18,000 concerts are organized by no less than 5 million musicians and bringing together 10 million spectators in France. This colossal success makes it a major event in the French calendar. The official kickoff of the summer is given in music and around a popular party.
However, certain characteristics of the Festival of Music hinder residents. The consumption of alcohol on public roads as well as the late closing of bars remains problematic. Local shops often allow the sale of alcohol to last until midnight, defying the rules in force. In addition, the bars close later, letting the sound invade the streets. Although some aspects are controversial, the excitement around this evening is still impressive.
Everywhere in France, the Fête de la musique will set up in mythical places. In Paris, whether at the Grand Palais, the Louvre Pyramid, the Wanderlust or the Cabaret Sauvage, various major events are planned and will entertain you for an evening. We hope you enjoy this early summer music festival!
