Vouvant is a pretty village located in Southern Vendée (85), in the Pays de la Loire region, 80 km from the Atlantic Ocean. It is nestled in the city walls and in a river ring. Vouvant owes its charms not only to its medieval remains, but also to its Roman church and to its streets full of flowers.
Access
Vouvant is only 40 km from Niort and 60 kms from La Rochelle and La Roche-sur-Yon. A 3h30 drive from Paris will lead you there. You can also come by TGV and arrive in La Rochelle or in La Roche-sur-Yon. The nearest international airports are in La Rochelle and Nantes.
Activities
Vouvant is nestled in a greeny area, which enables visitors and locals to enjoy nature activities and a wide range of sports. The city spreads on 2,019 hectares, including 510 hectares being a national parc, indeed. You can discover the area while hiking or bicycling in the nature. There are also activities such as fishing and horse riding.
A legend tells about the fairy Melusine, who took all the city’s walls, keeps and other churches out of her apron! And all those are treasures to discover! Other places of interest in Vouvant include the castle Chateau de la Precepte and the Fairy Melusine’s house (housing the tourist information office).
The city has a lot of picture galleries and organises several painting events and other exhibitions. You will find in October a painting market, called the Marche d’automne de la Peinture and in Novembre a painting auction, called Vente aux encheres de la Peinture.
Food and drink
The cuisine in this region is rich in desserts, brioches, fritters and other doughnuts. There are even small sweet delicacies, fruit-filled pastries and traditional confectionery. Duck is very famous for local recipes and you can also fin local honey.
