How to Install Parquet Flooring
Are you fed up with carpeting? The main problem with carpet is that it catches all the small particles spread in the air (dust, mites, etc.) and so it becomes darker through the years.
The four main advantages of parquet floor:
– It is very easy to clean and catch the dust
– It keeps warm during winter
– You can put parquet on any flooring (concrete, carpeting, tiles, etc.)
– It always looks new, even if it was installed ten years ago, as it is very scratch-resistant
Before installing the parquet, make sure your subfloor is clean. It has to be free of paint, oil, wax, dust, and other elements that would not ensure a good adhesion to the floor.
Parquet is very easy to install. There are no nails; just set the pieces in adhesive. The floor does not have to be very smooth. You can install parquet over most existing types of flooring, as long as they are secured in place.
Purchase a high-quality adhesive made for parquet flooring. All-purpose or flooring adhesive is not strong enough. A parquet floor has a rich look because it is composed of thousands of little pieces. So be careful if you want to put parquet on carpeting as adhesive will not work very well! Use small wooden bars of the same size to put between your parquet and your floor, which will inevitably let a small space.
On concrete it’s best to include a layer of polyethylene film, sleepers, and a subfloor before laying the tiles. Cut parquet tiles using a hand saw, circular saw, or sabre saw. Because the pieces are small, avoid injury by clamping them to a work table rather than holding them by hand.
Once you have installed your parquet, as sizes are not the same from one room to another, we advise you to install quarter rounds against the wall. When installing them, make sure you attach them to the wall, and never directly on the parquet floor, as the parquet could break very easily. See the picture below for more information on how to install parquet and where to place quarter rounds:
Make sure you do not leave space between tiles. When walking on it, this space could widen and then affect your parquet. To avoid it, delicately connect both tiles as shown on the picture above.
Remember that there are different ways to install parquet flooring, depending on the type of tiles you buy. For example, parquet floor and oak floor do not require the same installation, nor do they require the same maintenance. Oak flooring has a higher quality standard than parquet.
