Eymoutiers is a beautiful medieval country town set on the banks of the Vienne River, in the Haute-Vienne department (Nouvelle Aquitaine region). The town is built around the old monastery and offers a number of interesting places to visit such as the Romanesque and Gothic church St Etienne, a bell tower and an old convent. Although it is fairly small there are many shows, exhibitions and cultural events running throughout the year. The most popular sports activities are kayaking, canoeing, hiking, horse riding, fishing, cycling and even hunting. Eymoutiers is only 1 hour’s drive from the international airport in Limoges with daily low cost flights to the UK.
Access
You can fly to Limoges airport (1 hour) with Ryanair and Flybe, and there is a new airport due to open at Brive la Gaillard which could also prove useful. The TGV goes to nearby Angoulême, and Eymoutiers has its own station for local rail services.
Activities
Eymoutiers offers lots of activities, and a great way to begin is to take the special steam train from Eymoutiers station and discover the town and its history and surroundings. Of course, if this isn’t active enough for you, there are plenty of sporting activities on offer too, including tennis, petanque, horse-riding, cycling and walking. On top of this there is easy access to a golf course, and you can go to watch the exciting horse racing at Pompadour for a great day out. There are a host of interesting places to visit locally too, so access to a car is a great idea if you really want to get to know the best of the region. There is a Farmer’s market every Saturday and a fair on every first and third Thursday of the month.
Food and drink
Local cuisine comprises dishes such as penaud, pelaudine, pad Eymoutiers, pie potato beef and limousine lamb “belou”.
The Penaud is an old recipe and a small dish. It has become a speciality of Eymoutiers and today it shares the same name as the inhabitants of the city. It is composed of a paste of powdered almonds and hazelnuts and frozen chocolate biscuit.
