Revamp Your Garden !

For most of us, the dream garden has walls and fences that have space for a climber or wall shrub to decorate the garden. Here are some small tips to help improve the design of your garden so it can match your dream. Plants are the most common element you would find in any garden. The best solution to hide any part of your garden that you don’t like (grey wall, fence in bad condition, etc.) is to use leafy coverings. You can even go up the wall with plants by installing green-wall planting systems. Serious studies have proven that leafy plants on the walls of your property help to insulate the home in winter and helps keep them cooler in summer. This helps reduce heating and cooling costs.

When to mow your lawn?

Grass is also an essential element of your garden. However, you have to know when to mow the lawn. Little and often is the recipe for success. For most lawns, set the mower blades to 3cm (1.25-inch). Cutting the lawn once a week is generally sufficient as a regular cutting keeps the lawn thick and deters weeds. During the spring and summer, lower the blades to 2cm (1-inch) and you may need to cut up to twice a week as the lawn is growing very fast.

Permeable paving

Do driveways cause flooding? Through recent years facts have shown that paving over gardens is a major factor in causing severe flooding. Think carefully before you pave over your front garden. Where paving is necessary, keep the area as small as possible and use permeable materials (planning permission is required for non-permeable materials). These measures enable the rainwater to soak into the soil, rather than causing flooding. Among paved stones and special tiles, gravel remains the best element to hamper flooding.

Tidying lawn edges

Keeping your lawn edged tidy keeps the grass neat and prevents it from spreading out of its borders. After mowing, trim any grass that overhangs the edges with long-handled edging shears or a rotary trimmer. Avoid anti-weeding because it could easily spread into your grass.
Re-cut edges each spring using a half-moon edging tool. For straight edges, it is more convenient to cut against a plank of wood. Please leave a vertical edge about 7cm deep.
However, should you be a non-specialist in do-it-yourself, don’t worry if parts of an edge have been severely damaged, as it is easy to repair. Use a spade to slice through the turf, cutting out a small rectangular piece from around the damaged area. Lift from the ground with the spade and turn it around, and now the damaged part faces the lawn.

Improve your garden design

It has become fashionable to widen paths in order to make them easier to use with a stick, walking frame, or wheelchair. When widening a path, you should reduce the width of your borders – this allows easier access and avoids stretching. Undoubtedly, it makes it easy to reach all plants within a border. Consider raised beds as raising soil level can help with access. No specific dimension is required for a raised bed. Nevertheless, raising the ground level up to 10-12cm may make cultivation easier by making the soil easier to reach.
Now that you have been given all the small tips to maintain your garden in great condition, it is high time for you to get a green thumb!
