Lourmarin

Lourmarin is a commune in the Vaucluse department of the Provence Cote d’Azur region of southern France. It has the accolade of being one of the 200 most beautiful villages in France, its beauty accentuated by the Mediterranean climate that ensures sunshine for over 300 days per year.
The great writer Albert Camus spent the last years of his life in Lourmarin before his untimely death in a car accident.

Access

This commune is a very accessible place as it is only 1 hour away from both Marseille and Avignon. The former having an international airport (Marseille-Marignane Airport) and a train station (Marseille-Saint-Charles). The latter having a train station, Gare d’Avignon.

History/sights

There are many historical sites’ to visit in Lourmarin such as:
–    The fortress at Lourmarin (12th century).
–    L’Abbaye Saint-Andre de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (12th century).
–    The Priory (14th century).
–    The Parish church (15th century).
The whole of Lourmarin is a tribute to the Renaissance era, with each and every house or building proudly displaying a Renaissance architectural facade. There are also many art galleries, enough to quench the artistic thirst of any art-lover. Furthermore, there is a nature reserve close by, in which one can just sit back and take in the gorgeous Provencal countryside at their leisure.
Gastronomy
When thinking of gastronomy in this area of France, one thinks of a more Mediterranean flavour. Influenced through centuries of trade with the countries of the Mediterranean, the typical diet of a resident of Provence involves; garlic, spices, olives (and tapenade) and seafood. Traditional Provencal cuisine features dishes such as ratatouille (a type of vegetable stew) and Bouillabaisse (a white fish and shellfish stew). Some argue that the diet in Provence is the healthiest in France.

Climbing is very popular in Lourmarin as well as hiking and mountain-biking.
