Frejus is a coastal town located in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of the south of France. As well as being a medieval city it is also a popular seaside resort. It attracts many tourists due to its history, cultural and artistic qualities, beautiful beaches, the sea and many sporting facilities. Frejus was found and named after Julius Caesar in 49BC and is the oldest Roman city in Gaul. Today, the liveliest part of town is the medieval centre with its charming ensemble of pastel painted houses, 19th century mansions and cafés around the Cité Episcopale (a fortified Provençal Gothic cathedral with elegant 12-13th century cloisters and beautiful painted ceilings). Frejus is one of the most beautiful sights of the Var and is sometimes referred to as the Provencal Pompeii.
