Niort is a lovely market town dubbed the Green Venice and located in the south west department of the Deux Sèvres in the Poitou Charentes region. Its particular position on the banks of two rivers and less than an hour away from the sea are the striking features of its pleasant living environment. Its history dates back from the prehistory and has been marked by the wars of religion. Today, the town has a lot to offer and you just have to make your pick between the museums, the churches, the dungeon or the green space or all of them. It is part of the Towns of Arts and Crafts network which means there is much to do on that side as well with the cinemas, libraries and numerous exhibitions for you to enjoy. For nature lovers, there is the Mervent forest nearby and lots of activities are waiting for you in and all around the town: horse-riding, golfing, cycling, walking and fishing. The market takes place on Thursdays and every third Thursday of the month, the market gets even bigger and everything is literally drawn to it, giving the town a very special feeling to it.
