7th arrondissement of Paris

Paris 7th district is located at the heart of the city, on the South bank of the River Seine. It is a very prestigious and wealthy area of the city, and the Eiffel Tower, which needs no introduction, is located here.
The district is divided into four areas:

  • Quartier Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin
  • Quartier des Invalides
  • Quartier de l’École-Militaire
  • Quartier du Gros-Caillou

Famous places

This district is considered one of the “beaux quartiers” (posh districts) of Paris. The families living here are usually well-off. It is also home to some very important buildings, such as:

  • The various French Ministries
  • The Assemblée Nationale (lower house of the French parliament)
  • The Hôtel des Invalides (a complex of buildings housing museums and monuments related to the military history of France)
  • The headquarters of UNESCO
  • The headquarters of some political parties
  • Many embassies
  • Famous museums, such as Musée d’Orsay, or Musée Rodin
  • The Eiffel Tower and the Champs-de-Mars (the green space in front of the former).

However, if you’re a film fan, the 7th district only offers one cinema, called La Pagode, or the Pagoda. It’s considered to be one of the most original and unusual cinemas in Paris, with its Japanese-style garden and room.

The district also offers some beautiful churches, such as Sainte-Clotilde, Saint-François-Xavier, Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin, Saint-Pierre-du-Gros-Caillou, and Saint-Louis des Invalides at the Hôtel des Invalides. There are two Protestant churches: Saint-Jean and Pentemont.

For shopping lovers, a visit to le Bon Marché is a must, being as it is, one of the world’s first department stores, as well as the oldest and largest one in Paris. Every Thursday and Saturday, there is also an outdoor market, the marché de Breteuil, in which takes place on the Avenue de Saxe, and a street market, on rue Cler, open Tuesday to Sunday.

Cafés & Restaurants
Eating out is in an expensive business in this arrondissement.

  • Au Pied de Fouet: It’s an appropriate name for a restaurant renowned for its unapologetically rude staff. Some people say that this is part of the charm of the place…
  • Le Clos des Gourmets: A great little restaurant, elegant without being stuffy, popular with foreign visitors and American diplomatic staff.
  • Le Voltaire: has always been tres chic and with customers like Helene Rochas and the Rothschild family, you know you are dining with the right set. Peaceful wood panelling and lighting that flatters, this is an intimate and romantic setting, where newcomers feel that they belong to an exclusive club.
  • Le Cafe des Lettres: its charming cobblestoned courtyard makes this an ideal place to sit down and linger over a glass of wine. Excellent cocktail list.

Property price per sqm in the 7th arrondissement

According to the website Notaires de France, the average price per square meter was €12,010 in the third quarter of 2011. It is currently the second most expensive district, after the 6th arrondissement.

Population
There were 57 082 inhabitants in the district in 2008.
