Ille sur Tet

Ille sur Tet is a town in the Occitanie region of the Pyrenees Orientales department in the deep, south of France. Despite being in France and more importantly not in the Basque region, many in the area identify themselves as Catalan. The department is recognisable by its old townhouses with brightly painted exteriors and its almost Mediterranean climate.

Access

Ille sur Têt is an easily reachable town as it is not far from the main city of Perpignan.
AIR: Ryanair offers low-cost flights from the UK to the nearby airports at Perpignan, Carcassonne and Gerona. One can also fly to airports at Toulouse, Montpellier or even Barcelona.
RAIL: One can take the Eurostar from London St Pancras International to Paris Gare du Nord and then jump on a TGV at Paris Gare de Lyon and from there reach Perpignan in 6 hours.
ROAD: Ille sur Têt is off Junction 42 of the A9 motorway.

History

This area of France has a wealth of history and Ille sur Têt has some very fine examples of that wealth. The “Eglise St Etienne” dates back to the 10th century and the “Eglise des Carmes” from the 18th century. These two churches by themselves, offer plenty of entertainment for those interested in the historical elements of France.

Activities

There are many things to do, see and enjoy in and around Ille sur Têt including the views of the hills, gorges and other stunning natural scenery of the Fenouillet. For those who love outdoor pursuits, there are opportunities to do “canyoning”, white-water rafting, rock-climbing and “Hydra Glide” in the summertime and in the winter, one can partake of skiing and snowboarding in the Pyrenean resorts of Les Angles and Font Romeu which are less than an hour away by car.
Furthermore, there are the beaches of the Mediterranean just a short distance away as well as the option to drive or take a train to Spain and Andorra.

Food and Drink

There are weekly markets selling all manner of local produce including, fruit, fish, cheese and wine. The Languedoc is a large producer of Grenache wines, the Grenache grape being particularly prevalent in the region. In keeping with its quite Mediterranean climate, the region has cuisine that comprises a mixture of Spanish and Provençal elements. Seafood, olive oil, fruit and vegetables are all commonplace in any café, bar or restaurant in the area. Ille sur Têt is known for its contributions to primary industry. The area prides itself, as does a large portion of the population in the south of France, on its production of fruit and vegetables.
