Uzes is a town next to vineyards located in Uzege in the Gard department. It is located between Ales, Avignon and Nimes. The town was created at the same time as the Gard Bridge, part of a Roman aqueduct which supplied water to Nimes. Uzes became the first French duchy in 1565. There was a “diocese” from the 5th century to the French Revolution so Uzes has a lot of religious buildings.
Access
If you come by train, you can stop at Nimes or Avignon station and then take a bus. If you come by plane, the nearest international airports are Montpellier and Nimes. There is bus service between those airports and Uzes.
Activities
Uzes has a beautiful medieval city centre with cobblestone pedestrian streets. The weekly Languedoc market stands in the “Place aux Herbes” which is surrounded by arcade houses.
Uzes is a historical town with many places to visit such as: Saint Theodorit Cathedral with its Fenestrelle Tower (C12th), a Roman style bell tower which evokes Pise Tower, Saint Etienne Church, baroque/Jesuit style church, a protestant church, a mosque, Capucins Chapel, built over an ancient Roman temple and the Uzes castle with 3 feudal towers.
Close to Uzes there is the Haribo sweet factory with sweet museum and a traditional pottery factory.
Each year, the event “Pays Uzere – Gard Bridge ride” is organised and offers plenty of activities on the themes of family, culture, rides, heritage, statecraft, land, landscapes, environment, kids and night activities.
Food and drinks
Uzege area is famous for vineyards, olives, melons, asparagus, honey and truffle production. Every third Sunday of January there is the truffle day in the Place aux Herbes where you can directly buy truffles from farmers. From the 1st of June to 30th of September, there is the “terroir patrimoine operation” where visits and local gastronomy lunches are organised. You could savour all Gard specialities such as Tapenade (finely chopped olives, capers, anchovies and olive oil), Brouillade (with truffles), Brandade de morue (thick and creamy emulsion of hydrated salt cod, garlic, olive oil and cream), Fougasse d’Aigues Mortes and simmer bull.
Uzes is also famous for wine production. Since 1989, the label “Vin de Pays Duche” has been created. You can savour the local wine during wine testing in winemaker cellars, or every Thursday during the summer at Uzes tourism office or in the mid-August wine fair.
