Entraygues sur Truyère

Entraygues-sur-Truyere (“Entraigas” in Occitan) is a village of Aveyron department, in Occitanie region.It is located in the Valley of Lot, in the gorges of Truyere river and between Conques and Aubrac. It is also a stage in the journey to Santiago de Compostela.

Access

The D920 road and A75 motorway provide access to Entraygues sur Truyère.
The closest airports are in Rodez (27km) and Aurillac (30km). The closest train stations are also located in these two cities.

History

Entraygues means « Entre les Eaux » (Between the waters) and refers to its location at the junction of Lot and Truyère rivers. Entraygues would have been founded in the middle of the 10th century. It was a crossroad between Auvergne and Vallée du Lot roads.

Activities

The castle of Entraygues sur Truyère was built from 1278 to 1290, with ramparts with crenels, towers and entrance gates with drawbridge. The castle was sacked in 1587, partly demolished in 1604. A new building was built in the 17th century.
The town preserved its medieval streets, its 15th and 17th century houses.
The Gothic bridge over the Truyère had toll towers on each side of the river and, until the 20th century, retailers and peddlers stopped there to sell their products to passers-by. It resisted to the numerous floods, unlike the Pont d’Olt which was damaged by the water on several occasions.
Chapel of Notre Dame de Pontet was built in 1097 and extended in 1679.
As for sports, hiking, cycle touring, rafting, fishing and horse riding are available activities.
The traditional market takes place every Friday morning and the market for local producers is organised every Wednesday evening in July and August.

Food and Drink

L’aligot is a speciality of Aveyron with mashed potatoes, fresh cream, butter and fresh tomme of Auvergne. If you have to cut Aligot with scissors to serve it, it means it is a success!
Roquefort is one of the most famous French cheeses and is produced in Aveyron. It is a sheep’s cheese with parsley.
Estofinado is a dish with potatoes and dried fish (stockfish).
As for desserts, fouaces is a cake made of flour, leaven, butter, eggs, milk, sugar, orange blossom oil. Traditionally, it is crown shaped.
Regarding wines, the vineyards of Marcillac were created during the Gallo Roman period and produce a red wine.
