La Redorte

La Redorte is a charming village located in the Aude department in the Occitanie area. La Redorte is a picturesque village situated along the Canal du Midi with a strong history.

Access

To access to La Redorte by car, use the A61/E80 and exit at Esther Junction 26 or 27. The village is halfway between Carcassonne and Narbonne. La Redorte is easily accessible by train from Paris with regular trains to Carcassonne and Narbonne. Also, the high speed railway will be extended from Montpellier to Perpignan in the next few years. You can also flight directly from the UK to Carcassonne Airport via Ryanair. There are also airports in Montpellier, Perpignan and Nimes served by Easyjet or Aer Lingus.

Activities and History

With 1200 inhabitants and more than 1000 years of history, La Redorte combines authenticity, charm and modernity. The village presents marvellous examples of French gardens with beautiful trees, plants and flowers. There are also many places to discover in the village like abbeys, cathedrals, castles and museums. Along the Canal du Midi, the La Redorte Bridge is a beautiful masterpiece from the 18th century. The two keystones are decorated with the Languedoc cross, hammered during the French Revolution. Located on the left side of the Canal du Midi, the Epanchoir de l’Argent-Double was built in 1964. It is a beautiful architectural work with 11 arches. Since 1996, the Canal du Midi has been added to the Unesco’s list World Heritage sites.

In the heart of the Minervois area, the village offers outstanding landscapes and natural resources. La Redorte is bathed by the Canal du Midi and receives thousands of tourists each year especially from April to October with the river tourism. For those who love nature, the hiking trails of the Epanchoir de l’Argent-Double and Road Green are a great way to visit the village and the surroundings. The village offers various hot springs, caves and gorges. Sandy beaches are only one hour from the village.
Every year, the village offers various activities such as a music celebration and the Saint Jean fireworks on the 21st of June. At the end of the month of July, La Redorte celebrates its history with a local festival. All through the summer, the village offers a Thursday festival with various free dance, theatre or music performances. When autumn arrives, the “La Redorte fait son cinema” festival shows art and home movies for a small price during the week end.

Gastronomy

The cuisine of La Redorte is typical of the Languedoc Roussillon area, close to the Mediterranean cuisine. It consists of fresh vegetables in particular tomatoes, courgettes, eggplants and peppers. There are also lots of aromatic herbs from the scrubland (rosemary, thyme, juniper, sage and fennel) and olive oil, which is synonymous of cuisine of the sun. The area is well known for its beautiful vineyards as it is ranked as the first French and the largest vineyard area in the world with well know rosés such as Cotes du Roussillon, Corbieres or Saint Chinian.
