Châteauponsac is a village of Haute-Vienne department, in Nouvelle Aquitaine region. It towers above the right bank of the river Gartempe. The traveller will discover, on top of a rock, this peculiar town with its terraced gardens on the steep sides of the Gartempe and its fortification remains.
Access
By car, from Paris, take the A20 motorway, exit A24 (Bessines-sur-Gartempe) North of Limoges, then take the D711 road towards Châteauponsac.
By plane, the closest airport is Limoges-Bellegarde (35mn from Châteauponsac).
As for railway services, the closest train station are Limoges or La Souterraine. Then, bus connection is available.
History
Due to its advantageous location, the place where Châteauponsac is now standing was already of interest to men in prehistoric times, and also during the Gallo Roman period. In the Middle Ages, abbots founded a monastery (11th century).
Activities
With regard to Châteauponsac’s heritage, the traveller can discover the town’s 15th century houses with their outdoor stone stairs, a protestant temple which is quite unusual for this very catholic region, or Notre-Dame-de-Toute-Bonté Chapel, founded in the 11th century with gothic and roman architecture influences. La Porte Peyrine is one of the remains of the medieval fortifications and, the 14th century Benedictine priory church has been converted into a museum (Musée René-Bauberot) dedicated to the 19th century lifestyle in the region of Basse Marche.
There are markets in Châteauponsac (Place de l’Eglise) on Friday and Saturday mornings. Early fruits and vegetables market on Sunday mornings.
Food and Drink
In Châteauponsac, food is definitely Limousin-made. Among the most traditional meals, Galetous (Buckwheat creps), Pates de pommes de terre a la viande (potatoes and meat), la brejaude (vegetables and bacon soup) or le boudin de chataigne (Chestnust black pudding) are noteworthy. The cherry clafoutis is the most famous dessert in Nouvelle Aquitaine.
