Juillac le Coq

Juillac-le-Coq is a village located in Grande Champagne area, close to Segonzac, in the Charente department. Juillac-le-Coq is in a calcareous area dated back from the Bronze Age with vestiges of a neolitique camp. The Grande Champagne is famous because it has the best Cognac which is on the first rank out of 6 Cognac vineyards.

Access
Juillac-le-Coq is located 14km to Cognac, 24km to Jonzac, 40km to Angouleme, 53km to Saintes and 70km to the sea. The nearest airports are Bordeaux (100km), La Rochelle (120km) and Cognac with a direct line from London. You can also use the TGV to reach Angouleme

Activities
In Juillac-le-Coq there is a religious heritage with the Saint Martin Church from the 12th century which comes with a 2-storey bell tower, a sanctuary and a martyrdom. This church has been a registered historic monument since 1991. There is also the Middle-Age and baroque Juillac-le-Coq castle with a jail (1594), the Beauregard castle (1723) with its stables (1761) and the Logis du Frene (1589). In the Grande Champagne you have other interesting places to visit. In Segonzac there are the biggest church (11th century) and Protestant temple (which has been renovated in 1905) of the area. In Sonneville you could see a Roman church, a 17th century castle with a mill and stronghold vestiges. In Saint Fort sur le Ne there is a 5000-year-old dolmen of 40 tonnes.

The Grande Champagne is a countryside area where you could enjoy outdoor and green activities with 19 sign posted tracks created in order to discover beautiful landscapes, Roman art, castles, mills, churches and Charente architecture. There are also 3 bicycle circuits and horse strolls.

Lots of distilleries are established in Grande Champagne because the Cognac and the Pineau des Charentes are 2 local specialties. When you visit them, wine-growers take pleasure to explain the “Cognac”: its history, the way of refine wine, the different flavors, etc. Moreover, Juillac-le-Coq has 2 huge distilleries: Gableauteux and Le Peu (which is owned by the famous Hennessy). The Earthenware is also famous in this area and you can admire a traditional work at the Michele Robin Earthenware workshop (St Brice) where she realises beautiful hand-made earthenware items.

There are several animations throughout the year. You can take part to cooking and secondhand workshop and in the touristic rallies. In April there is the theatre festival (which has an association in the village). At the beginning of July there is a vineyard festival and during the summer there are the sleepless nights where all the monuments are floodlighted. Strolls, guided tours and tastings are organised.

Food and drinks
The famous specialities of this area are the Cognac and the Pineau des Charentes. The best Cognac is in Grande Champagne and enjoys vanilla and floral flavors. It’s the first liqueur wine which has the French “Appellation d’Origine Controlee” The Pineau des Charentes was created in 1589 when a wine-grower strike down wine rape in the Cognac Eau de Vie by accident. There are white, Rose, Red and old Pineau des Charentes.
Charente alcohol is also use in gastronomy. The Cassolette marine au Pineau des Charentes is a seafood meal (with monkfish, lobster, scampi, and scallop-shell) cooked with the Pineau des Charentes. The filet de boeuf des tonneliers Charentais is a delicious thick round of beek cooked with Cognac, bacon, crème fraiche and mushrooms.
