Argentan Property guide
Argentan is a quiet town located in the Orne departement (61) of Normandy. It is built in the middle of a limestone plain and is surrounded by the Ecouves and Gouffern forests. It is well-known for its lace-making tradition and the Argentan stitch, but also for its horse activities. The town has a rich cultural heritage and managed to preserve it, as you can still admire the remains of its 14th century castle and town walls. It also has two 15th century Gothic cathedrals.
Argentan is located 58 km from Caen and 100 km from Le Mans. The nearest airport with direct flights from and to the UK is in Caen (50 mins). Le Mans airport can be reached in 75 mins. There are ferries to and from Ouistrehem (Caen), Cherbourg, St-Malo and Le Havre. Argentan is easily accessible from the motorway, with exits close by. It can also be reached by train in 40 mins from Le Mans.
As Argentan has a rich past, you can admire and visit places of interest such as its numerous churches and chapels. The Saint-Nicolas chapel dates back from the 18th century and the St Martin des Champs church dates from the 12th century and the 15thcentury St Germain church was rebuilt after the WWII. Lots of castles can be visited as well: the château de Sassy, château du Bourg St-Léonard, château de Carrouges and the 12th century keep, located on the Place du Marché. The 14th century castle hosts the Palais de justice.
For those interested in knitting, there is the Maison des dentelles (House of lace-making), where they can learn about the history of this art.
There are also guided tours organised around the city, such as the “Visite guidée du Vieil Argentan”, “Les rues se racontent”, “Argentan au fil de l’eau” or “Argentan Pas à Pas”. You can also discover the surounding nature on your own, as there are many pedestrian and biking paths.
Food and Drink
Traditional food in this part of France includes cream, butter and cheeses. The famous Camembert cheese (soft, creamy and made from unpasteurized cow’s milk) was created in a neighbour village and the Pont l’Evêque, the Livarot and the Gruyère de Carrouges are also local cheeses. Regional specialities also include chocolate and sweets you can find under the names of Crottins du Haras, Etriers Normands, Diamants Normands (chocolate with Camembert), Caramels with camembert cream and Calvados Truffles.
As Normandy is an important apple grower region, local drinks include cider, Calvados, Pommeau (cider and apple brandy) and Perry.
