Espalion is a village of Aveyron department, in Midi-Pyrenees region. It is located in the valley of Lot, between Causses and Aubrac, and is considered as the capital of Haut Rouergue area. Espalion is also a stage in the journey to Santiago de Compostela.

By car, A75 motorway and RN88 road provide access to the town.
There are regular flights from London to Rodez Airport.
As for railway services, the closest train station is Rodez.
Espalion was created nearby a bridge over the Lot River. A roman road crossed Saint Come d’Olt (4km from Espalion). From the 10th century to the Revolution, the town was under the control of the Seigneurs de Calmont d’Olt and their stronghold. In the 18th century, a mission cross was placed on the bridge for the conversion of protestants.
“Les Calquières” are the former tanneries of Espalion. They are quaint houses with wooden balconies and flat stones called “gandoulières” that were used to clean skins.
L’Eglise Saint Jean was built at the end of the 15th century, became the city hall for a short period and, in 1978 was converted into a museum.
“Musée du Scaphandre” exhibits diving gears, some of which are unique items that attract experts from the entire world. In 1864, Benoit Rouquayrol and Auguste Denayrouze, both from Espalion, invented the first aqualung.
“Le Pont Vieux” is the most famous monument of the town. In the 10th century, a bridge already passed over the Lot, but this one was built during the 11th century. In the past, it had a drawbridge, over 20 shops and 3 towers.
The castle of Calmont was first mentioned in documents dating from 833. It is the oldest castle in Rouergue area. This medieval stronghold was abandoned in 1750. It is now heritage listed.
As for sports activities, Espalion offers fishing, hiking, and water activities.
Food and Drink
L’aligot is a speciality of Aveyron with mashed potatoes, fresh cream, butter and fresh tomme of Auvergne. If you have to cut Aligot with scissors to serve it, it means it is a success!
Farçous are savoury beignets made of meat and herbs. Truffade are fried potatoes with fresh tomme cheese.
As for desserts, fouaces is a cake made of flour, leaven, butter, eggs, milk, sugar, orange blossom oil. Traditionally, it is crown shaped. Also, 10km from Espalion, the abbey of Bonneval produces chocolate and the vineyards of Estaing offer red and white wine.
