Geography

Seine-Saint-Denis is located to the north-east of Paris. It’s one of the smallest departments in France and part of the 3 departments surrounding the capital.
It’s mainly consists of a plain structured by the broad valleys of the Seine and Marne and a relief buttes witnesses, with the Plateau d’Avron and the hill of Belleville – Menilmontant.

Saint-Quen is known for its marche aux puces (world’s largest flea antiques market) with over 2500 dealers. With 150,000 visitors during the weekend, the market has become one of the highlights of Paris.

Montreuil is the most populated area of Seine-Saint-Denis, only 4.1 acres from centre of Paris. Long famous for its peaches and pears, Montreuil has a variety of light industries. In the centre of the town is the Church of SS. Peter and Paul dating back to 12th century and in the nearby public park there is a museum dedicated to the Socialist and workers’ movements.

Activities

This department is rich in cultural life. Each year it hosts number of events like Festival de Saint-Denis (classic music, choraland international concerts), Festival Banlieues Bleues (jazz), Biennale de la Danse (dance even) and Festival Banlieues du Monde (international music).
There are also several shows for such as Zingaro circus, danse show in Saint Denis and Academie Fratellini.
For the museums enthusiasts there are numerous attractions: Musee de Saint Denis, Musee de l’Automobile in Pantin, Musee Christofle in Saint Denis, Chateau de Saint Ouen, Musee d’Histoire Vivante in Montreuil and Eglise Notre Dame des Vertus d’Aubervilliers.
However, the visitors “must” of this area are: St Denis basilica, St Quen Flea market and the France stadium.

Gastronomy

Seine-Saint-Denis as Paris offers a large variety of traditional regional and international dishes. The menus are mostly influenced by the Normandy and Champagne region.
