Argenton sur Creuse

Argenton-sur-Creuse is a village of Indre department, in Centre region. It is located in the South of the department, in the Boischaut-Sud green area. It is nicknamed “La Venise du Berry” (The Venice of Berry region) since the river Creuse flows in front of its houses.

 

Access

The D48 – D106 – D132 – D137 – D913 and D927 roads go through Argenton sur Creuse.
The village has its own train station and, the closest airport is Chateauroux-Centre (38km from Argenton sur Creuse).

History

Argenton-sur-Creuse was named Argentomagus during the Gallo Roman period. In the Middle Ages, it was converted into a fortified place on top of its hill towering above the valley. In 761, Pépin Le Bref seized the stronghold, which became a castle with 10 towers. The upper part of the town (right bank of Creuse river) began to grow from the 15th century. A bridge called “Vieux Pont” was built to link together the two parts of the city.

Activities

There are two unique museums that are worth seeing: “Musée de la Chemiserie” (Museum of the Shirt) tells visitors the shirt’s History from the Middle Ages to nowadays.
Argentomagus (Saint Marcel – 2km from Argenton sur Creuse) is a Gallo Roman city and an exceptional archaeological site. Remains (mostly 2nd and 3rd centuries) from the Roman occupation were found such as a well preserved theatre, a Roman villa, a necropolis, a fountain and thermal baths. A museum exhibits items found on the premises: statuettes, pottery, toys, mural decor…
The “Centre aquatique” of Argenton sur Creuse is a leisure centre with outside and inside pools, sauna and miniature golf.

Food and Drink

In Argenton sur Creuse, the traveller will find specialities from the region Centre such as cheese made from goat and cow milk: Sainte-Maure de Touraine, Selles-sur-Cher, le crottin de Chavignol. Touraine lamb, géline with Orléans mustard or saffron, andouille de Jargeau, rillettes de Tours and Chartres pâté are to be found everywhere. The region also produces a peculiar “eau-de-vie” called Poire d’Olivet, which is distilled pear alcohol.
