Toucy is a commune in the Yonne department which is in Burgundy. Burgundy itself is positioned in the northern part of central France and is well known for its wine production.
Access
Toucy is relatively accessible with Paris Charles-De-Gaulle Airport and Orly roughly 1 hour 50 minutes away. Aéroport Dijon-Bourgogne is approximately 2 hours away.
History
During the time of the Roman Empire, the area was known as Toutiacus. This evidence makes the settlement one of the oldest in France. In the Medieval Ages the sovereignty of the county, like many counties in France at this time, was hotly disputed between the King of France and the Dukes’ of Burgundy. France really wasn’t united as a whole nation until the 19th century! Burgundy was an English stronghold during the Hundred Years’ War and was therefore attacked rigorously. The fortified church, more castle than church in fact, was completely destroyed in 1423. The castle was re-built a century later but in a style more in keeping with the Renaissance period.
Monuments
As mentioned prior, the fortified church from the mid-16th century still stands today as does the Chateau de la Motte-Miton which was built in 1523 and the Chateau de Miton which whose construction was ordered by the Duke of Burgundy in the 18th century.
Gastronomy
Burgundy is much celebrated for its delightful selection of red and white wines. In addition to these there are the traditional dishes such as Beef Bourguignon (a red-wine and beef stew) and Escargot de Bourgogne (snails) which are famous the world over.
