Etang sur Arroux

Etang-sur-Arroux is a village of Saône et Loire department, in Burgundy region. It is part of the Beuvray Val d’Arroux which groups together 7 villages of Arroux area: Etang sur Arroux, La Comelle, Saint Prix, Saint Didier sur Arroux, Saint Leger sous Beuvray and Thil sur Arroux. The soil of Arroux area is not suitable for cultivation; therefore, it was converted into hedged farmland mostly for the breeding of the famous beef Charolais.

Access

By car, from Dijon or Beaune, head towards Autun, then take N81 towards Luzy, and then the D994 road to Etang sur Aroux.
From Moulins, head towards Luzy, then take the N81 towards Autun, them the N81 to Etang sur Arroux.
As for railway services, from Paris or Lyon, there are trains to “Le Creusot TGV” train station.

History

The 11th century church of Etang sur Arroux was replaced in the middle of the 20th century by the current neo gothic style building. During the 12th century, the village was under the control of a family named “les d’Estang”.

Activities

The museum of Celts civilisation in Saint Leger sous Beuvray was created around a Gaul village, Bibracte, where Vercingetorix was appointed head of the Gaul coalition. Today, it is a remarkable archaeological site: the traveller can discover the ramparts, la Porte du Rebout which was one of the main entrances to the oppidum, la Pierre de la Wivre (a rock, source of folk tales about a local demon), and remains of Gaul and Roman constructions.
In Etang sur Arroux, La Maison du Passeur is the oldest building of the village since it dates from 1636. The village created a museum of the sabot which exhibits workshops and collections from France and Europe.
Etang sur Arroux being on the edge of a river, water activities are available. There are also horse
riding or hiking activities.

Food and Drink

Charolles beef, an AOC meat (a label that testifies of its origin and quality) is a major local product in Bourgogne. At first (and until the 18th century), Charolais beef was only bred for local consumption. However, during the 1867 Universal Exposition, Charolais was awarded as best meat and was then to be exported across the whole country.
In Etang sur Arroux region, snails are cooked “a la Bourguignonne” which means with butter, garlic, shallots and parsley.
Finally, Bourgogne produces 33 high quality wines. Chablis, Grand Auxerrois, Côtes de Beaune, or Maconnais vineyards are some examples. Bourgogne grape varieties are Pinot Noir for red wines and Chardonnay for white wines.
