Geography

Cote d’Or, which is nicknamed the Bourgogne Champs-Elysees, is a French department at the East of the Burgundy region surrounded by Yonne, Nievre, Saone et Loire Jura, Aube and Haute Marne departments. There are Seine, Rhone and Loire tributaries (Armancon and Aube for the Seine, Saone and Arche for the Rhone and Arroux for the Loire). This department is split in 4 geographical areas: the Plateau de Langres on the north, the Plaine de la Saonne on the East, the Auxois-Chatillonnais on the North-West and the Morvan on the South West with the Mont de Gien which is the summit of the Cote d’Or (723m).

Towns and villages

Beaune is the Bourgogne wine capital and is located in the middle of the wine road. It is a lovely city which is one of the most flowery cities in France. Beaune is also a historical city with several castles, battlements, the Fontenay Abbey, the Notre Dame Dieu Basilica and typical streets with little squares and half-timbered houses. There are many activities to do such as museums and tastings (wine, cheese …)

Montbard is an old druid community located in the Brenne Valley (North of Dijon) with interesting museums and a beautiful park.

Saulieu is Morvan capital and is located in the Morvan Natural Park. The city is famous for its gastronomy (Alexandre Dumaine and Bernard Loiseau), stockbreeding’s, ponds and Christmas trees growing. The basilica dated back from the 12th century has interesting roof architecture.

Dijon which is the historical capital of Burgundy is located in the East of the department at the beginning of the wine road. Dijon has a wonderful medieval centre with a lot of religious buildings, touristic areas, museums and festivals. Dijon is also famous for its mustard, chocolate, Cassis (blackcurrant) and Champagne.

Activities

The most popular activities in this area are: biking (800km in vineyards, country road…), tasting lessons, kayak, bowling, casino, golf, hot-air balloon, water-ski, rowing, barge, dry-fly fishing, swimming pool, skate park, horse riding, pond with beaches and guard swim, karting, paintball, laser game, aqua park… and of course gastronomy activities such as Burgundy cooking lessons and wine tastings.

This department abounds of festivals and cultural events. In June there is the Festival “Les Enchantes” with different kind of music (Cuban, Classical, Percussion…), the summer music festivals…. Moreover, there is a Zenith in Dijon with frequent concerts and fairs.
There are lots of interesting visits to do in this area such as the Fontenay Abbey which is listed as a world heritage, the Famous antique city of Alesia, Beaune hospice, the medieval city of Semur en Auxois, the Chatillonais forest, Savilly panorama of Morvan, castles (Rochepot, Chateauneuf and Montfort), Dijon, the wash house tour, the Madame de Sevigne road, the Bourgogne dukes road, the blackcurrant road and of course the famous wine road From Dijon to Santenay.
The Cote d’Or is one the most famous place in France to discover wine. The wine road crosses 38 typical villages where you could try different favours of Bourgogne wine. This famous road (60km) starts in Dijon, stop in well-known vineyards like Nuits Saint George, Beaune, Pommard and stops in Santenay. It is possible to do it by car, by bike but you could also hire a driver if you prefer enjoy your tasting without any drawback. All over the year, there are also many wine events like tasting, expositions…

Gastronomy

This department is renowned for snails, honey, gingerbread, mustard, blackcurrant (and especially blackcurrant cream to mix with Champagne), cheese (Epoisse, Delice de Pommard and Citeaux), beef, Chocolate (Lanvin), anise, Meurettes eggs, ham sprinkled with chopped parsley, truffles and wines. Cote d’Or offers plenty of typical meals such as the snails and frog legs mille-feuilles, the snail trout, the Gaston Gerard chicken (with white wine and mustard), the trout pie, scallops with grey truffles and Genievre, the coq au vin (cock with wine) and the Bourguignon Beef (with bacon, wine, mushrooms and carrots).
