La Plagne

La Plagne is one of the biggest ski areas in the world and part of the Paradise ski domain with a large choice of facilities. It is a great ski resort for family ski holidays or for a mixed ability group skiers. It consists of 6 high altitude resorts. There are all located at the bottom of the slopes, linked by free transport. La Plagne usually open its winter season in mid December and finish it in the end of April but during the summer there is a possibility of skiing on the glacier Bellecote. There are also 4 village resorts: Champagny en Vanoise, Plagne Montalbert , Montchavin and Les Coches which have the same winter season opening.

Access

La Plagne is situated in the Savoie department among the French Alps, close to the Swiss and Italian borders. Chambery and Geneva are the nearest airports and can be reached within 90 and 130mins. From London, there is also a direct (night) service by Eurostar which takes around 10 hours.

Activities

Thanks to its 225kms of slopes and a perfect situation (opposite the Mont-Blanc and Beaufortain ranges), La Plagne offers the best conditions for skiing. There are 18 black runs, 33 red runs, 69 blue runs and 10 green runs, served by 141 ski lifts. For the snowboarders there are plenty of off-slopes opportunities like a 6.3 acre snow park in La Plagne Soleil. For the non-skiers, there is a choice between: craftwork, quads, skidoos, paragliding, guided tours, dos sleds, bobsleighs or snowshoe trails. Apart from that, the tourists can visit an ice rink or an outside heated swimming pool. This resort is also adapted for the disabled visitors offering the unique in the world –vertiskiing but also tandem skiing, dual skiing, GMS, Xbefree and uniskiing. After a good dose of sport during the day, there is a time for relaxation in the local spa, Turkish baths, jacuzzis and hydrotherapy centre. In the summer time, La Plagne also prepare a lot of attractions such as canoeing, kayaking, rafting, via ferrata, candi-rando experience (day of woodsman with Nordic dogs), mountain biking and many more adventures. To join or simply watch the best sport competitions, is a “must” to be at Les Etoiles du Sport,The telemark European Cup and La Gorzderette events.

Food & Drink

Meat and cheese feature heavily in Alpine cooking .Typical Savoryard restaurants has a number of tasty treats in store for those who like to sample some regional specialities like Fondue, Raclette (hot scrapes of cheese over potatoes and pickled onions) and Tartiflette. Worth to try is also the Savoyard wines, flavoured apples and pears.
