Chamonix

Chamonix is considered to be the most spectacular and scenic ski area in the world. It has an “all-year-round” season with over 700km of pistes and Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain is a constant backdrop. It is also a great place for the non-skier, with an excellent range of shops restaurants and bars, an alpine museum, exhibitions and an ex-Olympic sports centre with indoor and outdoor pools.

Chamonix is situated in the Haute Savoie region of France, among the Alps. Geneva and Chambery are the nearest airports and can be reached within 90mins.

History

From the late 19th century on, the village developt tourism. The commune successfully lobbied to change its name from Chamonix to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc in 1916. By the 1960s, agriculture had been reduced to a marginal activity, while the number of tourist beds available rose to around 60,000 by the end of the 20th century, with about 5 million visitors a year. Chamonix is today a luxury ski resorts and manage to keep its traditional charm.

Activities

There are winter and summer activities in Chamonix During the summer you can visit Aiguille du Midi, Mer des Glace, doing moutain biking, climbing and hiking around the Mont Blanc. There is also a golf which is poen until the first snow. During the winter, you can ski from December to May (subject to snow conditions). There are 3 main ski areas: Brevent/Flegere (1030m – 2525m), the Grands Montests (1235m – 3300m), Le domaine des Houches (950m – 1900m) and the Balme area (1453m – 2270m).

Food & Drink

Raclette (hot scrapes of cheese over potatoes and pickled onions) and strong mountain hams are eaten daily, and Marc de Savoie and Genepi are the fierce local spirits, taken in shots. On the ski slopes you will be able to drink a mulled wine to warm you up.
