Piegut Pluviers is a commune in the Dordogne department in the region of Aquitaine. With Bordeaux airport 112 miles away and Bergerac airport only 71 miles away, Piegut Pluviers is easily accessible. There are plenty of sporting facilities in the area; be it the conventional swimming or playing golf, or the unique conker championships! The village market has been said to be the best of its kind in France and takes place once a week while the local countryside attracts horse-riders and ramblers. There is lots of culture to soak up in nearby art galleries and hilltop caves with ancient paintings. Be sure to make the most of the local delicacies- one of the favourites is foie gras on toast with a glass of chilled sweet Monbazillac! Walnuts, truffles and prunes are also specialities of the region.
You can fly to Limoges or Bergerac with Ryanair and flybe, or to Bordeaux with British Airways, flybe, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet. If you prefer to travel by train, the TGV goes to Bordeaux, so it is possible to take the Eurostar from Waterloo, change to TGV at Paris or Lille, then travel to Bordeaux on the super fast train. The nearest train station is Angouleme, approximately 45 km away.
If you are looking for some sporting activities, whether your tastes run to the popular (swimming, fishing, golf) or the more unusual (conkers championships!) then the chances are that you will find something to please you in and around Piégut-Pluviers. The weekly market is outstanding and is even said to be one of the very best of its kind in the whole of France. Why not hire a car and visit the caves of the Font de Gaume, with its unbelievable cave paintings? The local countryside is excellent for the simple pleasures afforded by so called “green tourism” such as walking, cycling and horse-riding. The Cathedrale St Front is a must see in nearby Périgueux and the art gallery in Perigord is a great way to spend an afternoon.
Food and drink
One of the main reasons that people love France is the cuisine, and here in the Dordogne (generally referred to as The Perigord) is one of France’s top gastronomic regions. Foie Gras is a speciality of the region, with its rich buttery taste, it is best eaten with toast or a slab of bread, and a glass of chilled sweet Monbazillac. Hearty dishes are created using the finest ingredients involving duck, goose, walnuts, truffles and prunes.
