Riberac is situated in the Aquitaine region, borderlining Poitou-Charentes. More specifically, it is in the Perigord Vert of the Dordogne, a department of Aquitaine filled with rolling green countryside. Bergerac is the nearest airport and can be reached in 1h. Bordeaux airport can be reached in 1h50. History
For many centuries, the inhabitants of Riberac; ‘Les Ribéraçois’ were ruled by successive lords. The houses of Turenne, Talleyrand and Bergerac, for example, took it in turns to take control. Once the Revolution took place however, things changed: Les Ribéraçois moved to the other side of the river thus declaring their independence. The Notre Dame church is the oldest monument in Riberac and thus the greatest witness to the town’s history. It has been beautifully restored and holds exhibitions throughout the year, including displays of contemporary art. Activities
Within the town there is a cinema, a culture centre, a music school, a dance school, a sports stadium with tennis courts, two night clubs, three swimming pools and numerous bars and restaurants that often host special soirees. The famous Friday market also has musicians and drama groups regularly performing in its centre. Meanwhile, in the surrounding countryside and River Donne, there is plenty of space for cycling, fishing, horseriding and swimming. Canoes and kayaks are also available for hire along the river and bikes can be hired from Cycle Cum’s, 35 rue du 26-Mars. Explorations of the charming Romanesque churches dotting the countryside are particularly interesting. Food and Drink
Foie gras, truffles, goose and duck are the star foods in this area. The foie gras is either eaten alone, in slabs or combined with truffles as part of main dishes such as stuffed carp. This combination is often called ‘sauce Perigueux.’ Truffles are also eaten wrapped in bacon cooked in hot ashes. Meanwhile, the goose, more specifically grey Toulouse goose, is most commonly found in a potato dish: ‘pommes sarladaises’ and duck breast ‘Magret du canard’ is on almost every restaurant menu. Goose neck stuffed with sausage meat, duck liver and truffles is also popular. To accompany this exquisite food, the Bergerac vineyards produce good wine, most famous being the sweet white Monbazillac and then there are the reds from Cahors. Restaurants
