The area was first inhabited in the 6th century and then, due to its location within the old county of Nice, endured an awkward history as an independent county. Nice and its surroundings were governed at different times by Italy, Sardinia and then finally by France in 1860 as Napoleon III re-instated Nice, and therefore Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, as a part of France.
The early 20th century saw the arrival of the rich and famous at Saint Jean and this trend of celebrity has continued ever since.

There are an abundance of nature trails through which one can investigate the area and explore the scenery. There is also a zoo which shows off a range of flora and fauna. The Marina at Saint Jean is an impressive array of stunning yachts which is surrounded by the harbour which features many quaint restaurants.
The Musee Ile de France is housed within the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and contains a vast art collection and fine furnishings.

As with all parts of the south of France, seafood is particularly popular and this is demonstrated by such dishes as sea bass in lime and salmon tournedos with truffles.
