Geography:

Somme is in the Picardie region. It is surrounded by the departments Pas-de-Calais , Nord , Aisne, Oise and Seine-Maritime. Most of the territory is made of plains and cereal fiels, as it isn’t higher than 150m, except the Mont Argel, which is 210m high. The Somme owes its charms to the numerous valleys and plains in the landscape. Half of the land is used for cereal production, but they also grow sugar beet and potato.


History:
The settlement of pre-Neanderthal man in Somme dates back 300,000 years. There are remains of this period in Amiens and Cagny.
In the Middle-Ages, urban population in the department extands rapidly and the economy develops.
As elsewhere, the industry grows from 1850 on.
After the two world wars, it’s time to rebuild Somme for a rebirth. The department becomes more prosperous in terms of agriculture and industry.


Gastronomy:
Local dishes in Somme are mainly made of cream, potatoes, eggs and vegetables. The Flamiche is a sort of “quiche” with leek instead of bacon; the Gateau Battu is a very famous cake, which is close to the brioche. The maccaron is a speciality from Amiens, as the city has fruits, almonds and honey. The Ficelle Picarde is a dish made of crepes and mushrooms, baked in the oven.
