Pouancé is only 1 hour’s drive away from Nantes which has an international airport. Nantes is also the capital of the Brittany region.
The town developed during the medieval period. The 12th century church, which was taken down in the 18th century, was used as the focal point for the budding settlement as it became the Parish church. The settlement came to be known by its current name in 1725. The town was well-known during the 1500s’ as a great forge for the development of cannon shot, a technology which was in its infancy at this time. Thousands of round-shot were made here during this century.
Le Chateau de Pouancé was constructed in the 11th century and still stands today, a testimony to France in an ancient era. There was renovation done on the castle in the 12th and 13th centuries, the “Grosse Tour” was installed in the 14th century and battlements were added in the 15th century. Since this time, nothing about the castle has been altered. The Chateau de Tresse was finished in 1848, coinciding with the year of the coronation of Napoleon III
The Pays de la Loire is famed for its pork products as well as the “Beurre Blanc” sauce which is a creamy butter sauce and of course a selection of regional cheeses that include Saint Paulin, Port Salut and Curé Nantais.
