Fontevraud L’Abbaye is a commune in the Maine et Loire department in the Pays de la Loire region. The town is instantly recognisable as it is dominated by the vast, ancient abbey which has been standing since the very beginning of the 12th century.

Access
Fontevraud l’Abbaye is situated 60 minutes from Angers and Tours, both of which have an international airport and a train station with services going directly to Paris.


History
The majority of the abbey was built between 1105 and 1160 with chapels and other buildings appearing over the ages’.
Between the 12th and the 19th century, the abbey at Fontevraud was the most powerful in France and it has long been considered one of the largest monastic settlements in Europe. Famously, 2 Plantagenet Kings of England were laid to rest there, Henry II of England and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine as well as Richard I of England. 

In 1804 however, the abbey became a prison to avoid being destroyed by the revolutionaries and it remained in this function until as late as 1963! Nowadays, the abbey is one of the cultural centres of France. It houses the “Centre Culturel de l’Ouest” and hosts exhibitions and seminars to enhance its reputation as one of the foremost educational centres in France.

Sights
Recently, officials of the abbey granted the public access to the Chapel de Sainte Cathérine (XIII century), the Chapel de Notre-Dame-de-Pitié (XVII century) and the Chapel de Saint Michel (XII century). All of these divinely constructed monastic buildings are of powerful interest whether one is religious or not.

Activities
With the River Loire close by, it is a good opportunity to try out sailing as well as canoeing or kayaking. Beyond that, the best way to discover the area is to simply walk or cycle around the area to discover the great scenery.

The Pays de la Loire region is famed for its crepes, fruit tarts and wide-range of wines that tantalise the taste-buds.
