Coutances

Coutances is one of the prettiest towns in Normandy. An 11-13 th century Gothic cathedral resides at its centre, followed by lovely cobbled streets filled with shops, bars and cafes.

Coutances is situated in the Manche department of Normandy. Ferries in Cherbourg can be reached in 1h.

History

Coutances was originally called ‘Cosedia’ and the capital of a Gaulish tribe called ‘the Unelles.’ Its name then changed to ‘Constantia’ in honour of the Emperor Constantius Chlorus and through having a castle, forum, temple, fortifications and impressive strategic position, it soon became a place of great importance.

Activities

The Notre Dame Cathedral is a must see; it is an exceptional example of Norman architecture that contains a chapel and stained glass dedicated to Saint Marcouf then in the summer there is a sound and light show that beautifully highlights this dramatic building. There is also the Musée Quesnel-Morinière, a local theatre, public botanical gardens and an art museum: L’Art du Bois, which displays wooden sculptures.

Jazz under the apple trees’ is a famous festival that takes place in Coutances every year. Now in its 18th year, it attracts people from around the world. European jazz is particularly popular as well as there being opportunities for lesser known groups to be discovered.

Golf, fishing, swimming and horseriding are also catered for in abundance.

Food and Drink

Cheeses such as ‘Camembert,’ ‘Livarot’ and ‘Pont l’Evêque’ are local specialities, as well as Normandy cream (used in most recipes), chopped liver and cider as Normandy is a major cider-producing region. ‘Calvados,’ an apple brandy is also popular and makes up the ‘Trou Normand’ (Norman break). ‘Kir Normand,’ cassis topped with cider, is a good aperitif and‘Flan Normand’ is a classic, apple tart.
