Climate:
The climate in this area is mild and pleasant. The annual temperature is about 56° F. There is not a lot of rain but is significant even in the spring where the annual rainfall is about 28 or 30 ins.

Geography:
The department is part of the Midi-Pyrenees region. The neighboring departments are Lot, Aveyron, Tarn, Haute-Garonne, Gers, and Lot-et-Garonne.

The area is 1440 sq m and the population is 188,553. There are three rivers that pass through this department and these are the Garonne, the Tarn and the Aveyron. The latest flows between Moissac and Montauban and divides the region into three hilly parts. The ones on the south-west of Garonne are a natural continuation of the plateau of Lannemezan. On the north-east is the plateau of Quercy and there is positioned its highest point that is 1634 ft. the lowest point of 164 ft is at Garonne. The alluvial valleys of the three large rivers are very productive. There are grown a lot of cereals like wheat, maize and oats. Almost everywhere is grown wine and a lot of grape is exported as fruits. There are also grown potatoes as well fruits like plums and apricots. One good breed of horse that is breed there is cavalry. Other animals are sheep, pigs, poultry and even silk worms. The manufacturing industry is represented by flour-mills metalfoundries, tanneries, various kinds of silk-mills. There are even manufacturers of linen, wool and paper.

This region is positioned on the north-west part of the Midi-Pyrenees and is formed from the former parts of Gascony and the quite smaller region of Languedoc. The newly formed department is various and tranquil that combines the best features of the both cultures.

This region is famous for the Romanesque art, its nature sports and its museums. There are castles, churches, old houses, abbeys. There are many things that can be found in this area like medieval towns such as Moissac, Auvillar, Montauban Ingres, Lauzerte, Montricoux, St. Antonin and Bruniquel. The famous castles are Bioule, Brassac, Goudouvrille and Gramont, Albi. This is also the road of the pilgrims of St. Jacques De Comspostelle. There is Lalbenque with the world famous truffle market, the fowl market in Caussade. Every summer there are organized concerts and shows. The different sports activities include canoes and kayaks in St Antonin and Cazals, rafting through the immense gorges of the Aveyron, parachute jumping in Bouloc, barge trips down the Canal des deux mers, fishing, speleology in Rocamadour, tennis, hiking, cross country cycling, guided visits in Montauban, flying above the hills of the Bas Quercy in montgolfières from Lamothe-Capdeville.

Imported are some raw materials for textile industries, timber, iron, wood-pulp, coal and agricultural produce.

The Garonne cannel transverses the department for 48 minutes and the navigable way from Garonne and Tarn is 82 minutes. Through this department passes the Orleans and the Southern railways.

History:
This department is created on November 4, 1808 during the time of the First French Empire by the desire of Napoleon I. It was created from neighboring territories. Most of the territory was taken from the Lot, after then the other large part of land was taken from Haute-Garonne and the rest departments that ware used for the union is Lot-et-Garonne, Gers and Aveyron.

This department also forms the diocese of Montauban and is part of the jurisdiction of the Toulouse court of appeal and to the educational division of Toulouse.

Gastronomy:
The exports from this department are mainly fruit, wine, flour, truffles from the Rouergue, poultry, phosphates and lithographic stone.
