Ploermel has kept in the city centre traces of its prestigious past, such as remains of the town walls which you can see in the city’s rich houses dating back to 1586 (for the Marmousets house) and 1150 (for the old Brittany Dukes hostel). You can admire lots of 16th century houses and hotels, but also the 13th century Cloître des Carmes (cloister). The 19th century blue chapel Ste Marie des Carmes houses art exhibitions from June to Septembre. The 15th century gothic-Renaissance style Saint Armel church has wonderful glass roofs and the tombs of Dukes Jean II and Jean III.
There are also museums, such as the Jean-Marie de Lamennais museum, housing the 1850 astronomic clock, which is classified as ancient monument and the biology museum.
For those who prefer being close to nature, the lake Lac au Duc is the ideal spot for water sports. There you will be able to go hiking, sailing, fishing, canoing, or even catamaran sailing and water skiing. The lake is 617 acres wide and the 16 km path enables you to go around the lake within four hours. Buying and cooking your own food will give you a better idea of what life could be like in the region than just staying in a hotel. The tourist office will be able to supply contacts.
